How do online classes work?

Online classes at Rasmussen University are not just virtual versions of on-campus classes. We know our online students are looking for more flexibility to balance school with the rest of their lives. That’s why we design our online classes to have all the engagement of being in person with all the freedom of being online. Live sessions, emails and online discussion forums allow you to ask questions and build relationships with your instructors and classmates, but you get to choose when and where you log on.

What do online classes look like?

You’ll find all the information you need for your courses in an online platform called the Student Portal. Announcements, assignments and syllabi are all available in one easy-to-access place. You’ll also find links to writing, tutoring and research support so that you can stay organized and get the resources you need.

Do I have to be online at a certain time of day?

No. Although some courses may have due dates scheduled each week, you are not required to log on at specific times each day. Live sessions give you the option to interact with your instructors and classmates, but these are recorded and can be viewed later if needed. In most cases, you can expect to log on multiple times each week to stay on schedule with your assignments.

How do I communicate with my instructor if I have questions?

Instructors are available to answer questions and provide support by phone, by email or through a live chat on the Student Portal.

How do I connect with other students in my online class?

Meeting other online students at Rasmussen University is easy with our interactive classroom environment and discussion boards. Plus, we host private communities on Facebook just for Rasmussen students to connect.1

What materials and textbooks are needed for online programs?

All you need is a reliable computer with an adequate internet connection. Otherwise, we’ll provide the materials you need for each course. While some courses use physical textbooks, most use digital content, including e-textbooks, videos, downloadable content and interactive libraries. Costs for these materials are covered in the Course Technology and Resource Fee, which is charged per course.2

"Sometimes, students wonder whether online education is the best way to meet their academic goals. As a first-generation college student that had only studied in traditional programs, I wondered the same thing. But as a wife and mother of five with a full-time job, attending school in person would have been impossible. The decision to earn a degree online meant I had more control over when and where I learned."
