You hear the term “Dress for Success” often in the business world. You hear it in every field and in every type of career even though not all positions require the same type of dress attire. So, how do you “Dress for Success”? First, make sure you dress appropriate for the job interview.
During or after your job interview you will discover what the appropriate dress will be for the company or department/position you are applying for, but until you know what that is, always err on the side of conservatism. Follow these guidelines, and you will never have to wonder if you dressed appropriately for the interview. In fact, if you have to ask yourself, “Is this right to wear,” then it’s not.
1. Start Building Your Wardrobe Now. If you are currently in college, start adding pieces as your budget permits, so you will have your business attire ready six months before graduation. What you should have in your wardrobe is a solid color conservative suit, dress, skirt or slacks. Add a coordinated shirt or blouse and moderate shoes. Men should add a couple of classic colorful neckties that show off their personality. It also shows you put some thought into coordinating your shirt and tie.
2. Always keep jewelry limited. If you wear rings, keep it to one ring per hand. If you wear earrings, wear only one earring in each ear, and if you are male, take your earrings out. And by all means, remove any facial piercings until you find out if the company you work for allows piercings.
3. Keep your makeup light, and nix the perfume or cologne.
4. Carry a nice portfolio or briefcase. Make sure you include copies of your resume and your portfolio of achievements.
